Block Challenge Completed!

Riley Blake Design - Quilt Block Sewing Challenge

With everything that was happening this year, Riley Blake Designs started a Quilt Block Sewing Challenge in March.

Each Monday the Riley Blake team released a new block to sew along with the designers for 12 weeks.

There were two size blocks with the challenge 6" and 12". I had in my mind for a while to do a quilt with large blocks so I decided to just do the 12" versions. And never to do things in halves, I decided to do 4 of each block to make a large quilt top or two.

Many of the blocks I had not stitched before or I did not know the name of them. So I really enjoyed learning new skills as I went along

Here was the schedule for the blocks, I have included the link to each tutorial

After I had finished all the blocks then came the fun part of the design for the quilt. I had not planned the block colours. I had the fabric and with lockdown, in place, I was determined just to use it and use this project as a stash buster.

I think my favourite block in the challenge was the log cabin block - so I wanted to put that in the heart of the design. The rest just kind of fell into place based on the colour balance.

The quilt was then quilted by my friend Bronwyn. And after hand stitching the binding on -  below you can now see my finished quilt!  I just love how it turned out. Plus, the great thing is I still have some of the blocks left to make a smaller throw quilt.

This Dotty & Grace sampler quilt finished at 72"x72" and I had to get two quilt holders to help me for the photograph. It is a fun sampler, so watch out - there could be a pattern to follow.

What is your favourite quilt block - leave a comment below.
